Aquamarine

Time for a new Funkie Junkie Boutique Challenge and it has us enjoying the shades of Aquamarine!  The talented Cec is hosting and here is how she describes the challenge:

"Aquamarine, the birthstone of March, has a rich color and has long been a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its mesmerizing color ranges from pale to deep blue and are reminiscent of the sea." The challenge is to create a shabby chic or vintage project using the colour aquamarine in any of its shades along with one other colour (it could be white or brown or whatever you wish). The definition has lots of other prompts you could also use in your creation but the colour requirement is the main focus."

And here is the inspiration photo showing all the glorious hues of blues...

I decided to make a large sheet of mixed media paper with a blend of distress oxide ink sprays and distress stain sprays.

When you have so many beautiful shades of blue using white as your other color choice really makes everything pop!

I started by painting my large sheet of mixed media paint with a coat of gesso.  I used a spatula to apply it to give it a plaster effect.  Purposely leaving valleys and ridges of texture over the background.  I then left that to dry.

Next I pulled out every distress oxide and distress ink I owned in blue. :)

I started with the darkest colors across the bottom and worked my way up to the lightest colors.  I then used some water and started to add additional liquid and tilted and moved the paper and colors across the background.  I came back in with more color where needed.

I left that dry and then picked up the extra ink on my craft mat as spots and splotches over various areas of my background.

I cut the background into different shapes and sizes. I used one of them for the base of my card and cut the flowers and butterflies from a few of the other pieces.

I tried layering the blue flowers and they blended too much with the background so I flipped them over and put them over the leafy stems.  The leafy stems were made from a shaving cream mixed with distress sprays.

I hope this has you inspired to bring on the Aquamarine!  The winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team.

  1. This is absolutely stunning. Even though the white pops against the blues, the contrast is so strong that the blues jump out too. Love it.
