Winter Hues

Hi!  I am hosting the challenge at Frilly and Funkie with the theme of Winter Hues.  The weather this time of year in the Midwest gets to be a bit chilly, icy, snowy and overcast. These elements of the season create a beautiful palette of colors which I am calling Winter Hues.    This challenge requires you use any or all of the following colors: blue, white, silver, gray in your vintage or shabby chic project.

I played around with a mix of blues, silvers, grays and whites and created a card and a canvas.  The card layered the music stencil with crackle embossing paste and snowflakes over that layer with white embossing paste.

I stenciled the music over an inky background stamped with text.

I started with a mix of dripping sprays down the front of the canvas.  I then added a layer of stenciled snowflakes which I sprinkled with chunky white embossing powder mixed with crystal glitter while the embossing paste was wet.    I then heat dried the embossing powder and it created nice puffy embossed snowflakes as well as capturing flecks of white embossing powder to add more snowy effect.

The words were added using white embossing paste and stenciling them onto the canvas.  While the letters were wet I sprinkled them with a shimmery blue glitter.

After I finished the canvas I decided to do a little different take on the canvas:

I scraped off the glittery blue and created white letters using the same process as the snowflakes. I also added circles and a few stamping of branches.  Every creation is a journey and you never know if you have reached the final destination. :)

Valentine

I have been busy playing with Valentines.  I have just a few to create which has me thinking of different ways to use my existing supplies.  I was inspired by the Mixed Media Monthly Challenge to Put a Stencil on It.

 I spent some time playing with a die cut out of a heart on a piece of white cardstock. I used a mask and a stencil to sponge on the gold and coral/red combinations on the card face.  I then decided to cut the heart around the edges but leave the center intact so I could fold up the base heart.

 That inspired me to cut out more hearts and layer them with the opposite pattern of colors and stencils. 

The background is stamped with a Verses Rubber Stamp - How Do I love Thee.  I love this script stamp and don't get to use it often enough. It is the full poem and in beautiful script.

The inks are gold and a mix of abandoned coral and a hint of red.  I used the mini harlequin stencil form Tim Holtz Layering Stencils.  I stamped the postal mark and the word Love from Stampers Anonymous.

To Circle or not to Circle

Howdy!  I am back to share my second card for a 16th birthday. I created the same concept for the sentiment on both card bases.  I stamped the sentiment and numbers on white mixed media paper while I had the letters out and lined up.

On this card I decided to do a gradient shading of coral, orange, and yellow dye inks.  I sponged on the colors.  When I was done the card was pretty but lacked in any depth.

I then decided to use black and add the harlequin stencil to the background in various places.  I then sponged the edges with the black as well.  I finished with splattering of the inks and white paint. 

I added a hint of white outline to the sentiment.  Then I left it for a day and came back and felt like it still needed more movement or depth.

I brought in more circles black and white varying in sizes.  I love the effect but may still tweak it to see if the sentiment can pop more.

Doodley Doo

Over winter break my daughter asked me to create a canvas inspired by some she had seen on pinterest. It involved doodling lots of doodled flowers and leaves.  I was hesitant as I had not done any doodling successfully before.  I used the doodles on pinterest as my inspiration and created her canvas.  This inspired me to use the same concept on a 16th birthday card.

This was an interesting process as each step along the way I wasn't sure of how it looked or if I liked what was being created.  My advice is to go with it because you will be surprised by how it looks when you finish. :)

I was pleased with the end result of my doodling and more importantly my daughter liked it too!

I started with mixed media paper.  This would have worked even better with watercolor paper. I stamped the words and letters with Stampendous clear alphabet stamps lined up on a clear block with lines to help keep the letters straighter.

I then took a sharpie with a fine point and drew the flowers, leaves, and other images.  When I did the canvas I used a pencil on a gessoed surface.  I was able to erase most of my pencil marks but try this out before you spend a large amount of time and find the eraser is not removing the pencil marks.  After the pencil is done and you are happy you can then use the sharpie to draw the permanent outlines.  I tried a micron and another pen I had and a few of them tended to bleed.  So try all of your doodles on the surface before putting it on canvas or on paper.

After that I used a waterbrush and watercolor paints to paint the mix of colors.  The beauty of this is that you don't have to paint in the lines.  It is more of a free form painting and having extra or too little color is acceptable.

Well a long post for a simple project and I hope it inspires you to try doodling some lines on your next project.

Joy

Happy New Year!  Today is the new challenge for the Funkie part of the Frilly and Funkie Design Team.  The first challenge of 2017 New Year's Inspiration is hosted by Jenny she has asked us to be inspired by New Year's resolutions.  For this challenge  create a vintage or shabby chic project depicting what you are inspired to do/achieve this year.

I have been inspired by 2017 to think positively.  I used Joy as my word for 2017. 

I created a wall hanging to put in my craft room to keep me focused on Joy in 2017.

I started with the music stencil in the background and misted it using wild honey distress stain spray. I repeated a few times on mixed media paper.  I also used it on a gessoed cardboard background.

I then used a variety of stamps and objects to think about Joy and how I could give joy, find joy, choose joy and be joyful.

The team will choose their top four picks with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot here at Frilly and Funkie and the next three will receive badges to display on their blogs.
