Butterfly Pocket Watch

Hi! The Funkie DT is showing off their wings for the Things with Wings challenge hosted by Pamellia a the Frilly and Funkie Challenge.   Anything with wings is acceptable for the challenge.  I pulled out the butterfly and dragonfly sizzix dies to get my project started.

I had a burst of inspiration while I was flipping through magazines. I love my magazines for papercrafting. I know there is lots of online forums and inspiration but for me relaxing is looking through magazines at different ideas, reading about what they did or inspired them.

I decided to pull out my watch case and give it wings.

The wings were die cut, embossed and sprayed with Ranger Distress Stain - Salty Ocean.  After they had dried I dragged silver ink over the raised areas.  It didn't get the effect so I added black ink. Tis gave a mix and more muted.

I wanted my wings to have a wow moment so I inked them up with some versamark and coated them with embossing powder that contains glitter.  I  used Stampendous Kaleidescope Embossing Powder.  You can also do something similar with just clear embossing powder and ultra fine glitter.  The Kaleidescope glitter gives it the rainbow colored sheen you can see here:

Next I punched out a circle of Tim's tissue paper and sprayed it and embossed it to coordinate. I put that in the background.

I found a lost relative to cut out and place in my watch. I added foam dots to raise it up and then added the coral flowers and the sticker tinted coral.

I decided to hang my watch and used an old necklace from my daughters junk jewelry.

Dreams

The Mixed Media Place August Creative Exercise #20 challenges us to be inspired by our dreams.  When I was younger I had a list of places I wanted to go explore and see.  I used that as my inspiration.

 I started with a scrap of paper that had this lovely mix of greens and blues in the background.  I then started working on another project which provided a lovely cut out of the sizzix dragonfly and I decided to use that to create an image on this background.

 I painted the butterfly using a mix of distress inks and a waterbrush. I added a hint of silver on the dragonfly. 

I then stenciled words about art using black stenciling paste over the top of my stamped images.

I added a few travel inspired stamps and words to finish my card.

Tags & Techniques

Howdy!  A blessed Sunday to you.  I have to say the beginning of the month when Tim posts his new tag for the month is always something I look forward to.  His techniques always inspire me to create.  Tim's September tag used the alcohol inks and yupo paper for one of the techniques. 

I am happiest when I am stamping.  I love mixing the stamped images together and creating a blend of stamps together into a cohesive design.

This month's tag and technique used a resist technique which game me lots of fun ways to play with my stamps and stencils.

I started with a patina background on the tag.

 I admit I ended up not using this tag in my finished project as I wanted to get close to the colors on my stamped background.  I will save this one for another project. I love how the patina looks and could have created many of these backgrounds in different colors.

Next I tried about 3 failed attempts with the alcohol ink backgrounds. I was trying to mix colors and they were beautiful but not cohesive to give a strong imprint and I also tried a few stamps that weren't solid enough in the image to translate well on the resist.

I finally settled on an alcohol ink background with a mix of slate, eggplant, and mushroom.

 Next I used an ultra-violet archival ink to stamp the butterfly and script onto the background. I stamped the butterfly first and cleaned it off following Tim's instructions and then I did the script.

I then tried on several scraps to use the blending ink with the stencil to get the numbers/words. The blending alcohol will bleed and I didn't like how I was applying it so I decided to sponge on the same archival ink through the stencil and was very happy with the crispness of the letters.

Another tip:  The Yupo paper is so wonderful that I was able to flip over one of my failures and use the reverse side for my card.  I also had another failure with the resist which I was able to just ink over again with alcohol inks and start again.  Like a magic eraser!  

I was having so much fun stamping with the resist that I decided to create another stamped collage.

 On the bottom  you can see some smearing this was because I didn't carefully remove the excess ink.  Tim talks about it in  his tutorial.  Just thought I would mention it because I did try very carefully but I am a very messy stamper and missed some ink. :)

Silver Anniversary

The Frilly and Funkie Challenge is hosted by Nancy this time around and she has inspired us with Floral Infatuation.  You can create any shabby chic or  vintage project with flowers as the focal point. 

I had a need for a silver anniversary card and decided to foil it up and create silver flowers as my focal point.

I did a quick check that the 25th anniversary was indeed the silver anniversary and that became my main effect.  I wanted to blend layers of silver with the flowers, leaves, numbers and annivesary die cut.

In the background I stenciled more flowers using the doily stencil and silver embossing paste.  I decided I wanted a hint of color and used a little smattering of pink on the flowers and smeared in the background along with a few pink glittery bits.

I think the recipient of the card will love the silver effect.   Hopefully you are inspired to go off and create your own floral infatuation art and join us in the challenge!

Happy Wednesday!  Just playing in the craft room over the past few days and what I was trying to achieve didn't pan out. Instead I ended up creating a tag with with some pretty summery colors.

I am going to continue to explore with my techniques in hopes of getting an end result I like. :)  

This is a mix of distress inks in the background with a stencil laid over the top and more darker distress ink sponged on.

I added a few glossy embossing paste. (Much trickier than the regular embossing paste. (hence the splotchy letters)

I then finished with a stamped image on tissue paper which was decoupaged onto the background.

I am entering this in the A Vintage Journey - Stencil It  challenge.

Shabby Garden

Hello!  Today I am the Featured Artist over at the Anything But Cute Challenge Blog!  Lisa is hosting Challenge #16  and what a beautiful challenge it is!  There is a wonderful Mood Board to inspire you featuring Shabby Garden.

I fell in love with the beautifully distressed wood in the pictures and had to play around with a faux garden fence on a mini book.

Blues

Hello! Today's tag is a continuation of playing with my scraps the other morning.  

I loved how this torn background looked and wanted to play with my Artistic Outpost stamps so I just started laying in bits and pieces until I got what I wanted.

The tag is covered with half newsprint paper from Wendy Vecchi and the other half the tag. I ripped off the newsprint after I had sprayed and stamped.  I then came back in with more spray on the right side to give the effect.

I stamped the girls on another piece of paper and then cut them out and attached them. Added a touch of shading around them and then added the skyline and sentiment.
