Altered Jewels

Hi There!  I am sharing a beautiful earring clip that I think came from my husbands Grandma.  The challenge this week at Frilly and Funkie is Elegant Jewels.  The host is the talented Cec and she describes the challenge as:

"Let's make a vintage or shabby chic project in jewel tone colours such as deep purple, emerald green, jade green, burgundy, bright turquoise to name a few AND to make your project extra special, add some sort of jewel or gem, which can be anything from a dollar store find to a piece of broken jewelry."

Jewel tones are so beautiful!  Vibrant rich deep hues of colors and if you mix them together you get a powerful punch of color.  I was inspired by the purple and peacock blue and decided to alter an altoid tin from last Christmas.

This tin took quite a few coats of gesso to cover the surface with drying time between.  I painted it completely white inside and out.  After it dried I stenciled some texture on the top. (Lost in the beautiful color and layering of tissue)

I then added spritzs of purple and blue over the surfaces and let them dry.  While I had the excess ink on my craft sheet I dipped my seam binding in and picked it up.

I had lots of drying time for all my pieces so I used that time to pull out the alcohol inks and dab my earring with purple and blue.  I left the natural pearl color sheen through in some areas.  After I finished with that I splattered the jewelry with white acrylic paint.

I stamped the beautiful sentiment on tissue paper and collaged it to the surface of the box.  I sprayed more inky colors over the surface to gather pooling of color.

After everything dried I splattered white paint over the surface.  I used a baby wipe to sponge up any paint over my letters that was covering the sentiment.

I finished the whole project off with a set of butterfly wings stuck in the brooch and ribbon.

I hope you enjoyed my tin box and are inspired to come play along with us.

The winner will earn the chance of a Guest Designer spot here at Frilly and Funkie, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. And there are Top 3 Badges for three further outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team.

  1. Terrific piece! I have some rather ho-hum vintage costume jewelry and your idea to give them a lift with alcohol inks is really great.

  2. The colors are great and I love your amazing jeweled butterfly. Such a pretty project Suzz! Hugs, Autumn

  3. Your attention to detail on this altered tin is amazing Suzz! LOVE how you've added the words and this is definitely one where I'd love to see it for real to appreciate even more the texture in amongst the colour xx

  4. Your tin looks magical, Suzz! I love the blue/pink/purple combination. So much lovely texture and the butterfly and brooch is a perfect touch.

  5. I love the way you always pull together a project with color, elements and sentiment. Pairing that sentiment with your Grandmother's old jewelry and a butterfly is just such a strong image and so very beautifully done. I adore your color choices and the wonderful paint spatters. You always inspire me! xoxoxoxo

  6. Suzz, this tin is soooo pretty! I love the colors and texture! Brilliant idea to add the quote on tissue. And that jeweled butterfly backed with that gorgeous seam binding steals the show! I love how the pearl shows through on the earring. Just GORGEOUS! Hugs!
