Things that Fly

It's time to fly!  The challenge at Frilly and Funkie this time around is "Get in on the Action".  The extremely talented Kathy is hosting and here is her description of the challenge:

" Adding an interactive element on a card, tag, layout or canvas adds a bit of fun to any project. For this challenge, create a vintage or shabby chic project that incorporates an interactive element of one sort or another in the design. You can add a pocket and tag, a hidden tag, a hinged page, a flap, a flip, a tuck spot, a special fold or any kind of interactive element that appeals to you. Be sure to tell us in your post what makes your project interactive, as it may or may not be apparent in a photo. "

Having just received the new Stampers Anonymous Entomology stamp set it  had me thinking of flying tags!

And since Kathy challenged us to be interactive. I thought it would be fun to use the bugs as the pulls on the tags.  I created multiple pockets with multiple tags to pull in and out.

Each tag has it's own stamped images along with a layered bug.  I stamped each bug in black on the same background paper and then added acetate wings.

The background is a mix of smooshed water and ranger distress oxides.  I also just acquired the new colors of inks and wanted to try them out.  I smeared, spritzed and smeared again the colors on my craft mat.  I added lots of water and swirled together the colors and then dabbed it up on mixed media cardstock.

After I had finished everything I matted it onto black cardstock and then flicked white acrylic paint over everything to lighten up the dark areas.

Butterfly on a Brick Wall

Hello!  I am back with a post for the current Frilly and Funkie Challenge hosted by the fabulous Autumn and the challenge is: "Dare to Resist".

Here is how she describes this fun challenge:

"I've chosen the theme Dare to Resist. For the next two weeks, as we break away from our Valentine creations, we'd love to see you incorporate a favorite resist technique in your vintage or shabby chic project. There are so many options, perhaps you will try something new. Whether it be gesso resist, Vaseline resist, alcohol resist, embossing resist, or watercolor resist, we dare you to resist!"

I have to admit this was the perfect challenge for me because I already was playing around with a project that used a form of resist and inspired my stucco effect!

I started with a big sheet of mixed media cardstock that I painted with white acrylic paint.  I let the paint dry and then moved onto the next steps.

I added a layer of pink and antique linen sprays.  I spritzed them on my craft mat mixed with spritzes of water.  I then smeared them randomly over the surface and let it dry.  You can also spritz directly on the painted background and drip off or sponge off excess.

After that dried I stamped text and other images over the background.

Next up is adding the resist layer.  Lay the stencil over the background and unevenly smear translucent embossing paste through the brick stencil.

Repeat with multiple areas of embossing paste.  Unfortunately you then have to patiently wait for the embossing paste to dry.  (Since I was waiting for those to dry I kept trying variations on the stamping)

This was my first background.  I continued on to make my next background because I wanted one lighter background and one darker background.   After the embossing paste dries you then drip and spray the darker ink spray over the surface.  You need to let it pool and dry to get a darker background.  

The paint will resist the ink and not allow it to soak in.  If you want to do this without the paint it will give a much darker effect.

I stamped the butterfly using brown archival ink on the same painted and inked paper. I heat embossed the stamped image with brown embossing powder.  After it dried I used more brown spray to spray the background of the butterfly.

I added a sticker sentiment and sponged it with antique linen and attached to the background.

I wanted something fun for the center of the butterfly and spent some time hunting through my charms, embellishments and miscellaneous stuff.

I sprayed a spool with brown inky spray. I wrapped it with gold thread.  I then embossed a charm with gold embossing powder and added a few pearls and a crystal.  I hooked them on a piece of gold wire which I threaded through the spool.

Sitting on the Dock of the Bay

Hi!  I wanted to share a few cards I recently created for Darkroom Door using their new Boat Shed Stamp.  I kept humming the song "sitting on the dock of the bay" while stamping this image.  It had me thinking of warm sunny days on the edge of the water with a light breeze blowing.

I am lucky to have a great collection of Darkroom Door stamps and I was able to pull them out to go with this beautiful image.  I used a stencil to create a lovely sunset behind the boat shed along with the wordblock stamp with all the great words to go with the image.

I created a tag card with a few dangling stamped images. 

 I used a rich peacock color in the background with a splattering of white paint in the sky and a fun red trim and doors on the boat shed.


My final card uses the new stencils that darkroom door just introduced to create a beautiful sunrise behind the boat shed.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I wanted to share this cute card I created for someone.  They love the interactive cards and this was fun to make!

 The dogs were adorable and I wanted to highlight them on the card.  I cut and colored and popped them up.  Just now I realized I should have used one of those springs to make them wiggly too! :)

These stamps were from Michael's in their valentines section.  I used Worn Lipstick - Ranger Distress Oxide for the background stamping.   The sentiment is from Hero Arts a very old set of stamps.

 And for all you who love cats here is my cheetah valentines. :) 

The cheetah and sentiment are from a Darkroom Door Rubber Stamp Set - Wild Africa Vol. 2.  The background is a  mix of fossilized amber and worn lipstick distress oxides spritzed with water.
